Looking for a refreshing drink that doesn’t contain sugar or artificial colors? Personally, having a toddler who wants to drink everything I do has made me pretty self-conscious about what I’m putting in my body. While I like powdered drink mixes that I can just dump in a pitcher with water and stir, I’m not sure they are the best drink for my family.
Ready-made drinks like soft drinks, juice, sports drinks, and other no-calorie drinks are some of the worst offenders for added sugars, which can be dangerous for children. (Check out my post How Much Sugar are Your Kids Really Drinking? for more information on these supposedly healthy drinks.)
As someone who likes tea, we started experimenting with various herbal teas and found one that makes a great, refreshing summer drink! Plus, the recipe is only two ingredients and very simple. I bought both ingredients at Trader Joes.
Kid-friendly Punch Recipe
- Red Refresh Herbal Tea
- Stevia
For a pitcher, I seeped 4 tea bags for a few minutes in hot water. Then, I stirred in some stevia (a little bit goes a long way). I let it cool and served it over ice.
That’s it! Super easy and way better for us than powdered or sugary drinks. The stevia makes it sweet without the added calories and health risks posed by sugar. In fact, there’s a great article about stevia from Medical News Today that breaks down the benefits to using stevia. Check it out: Stevia: Health benefits, facts, and safety.
Don’t have a Trader Joes in your area? No problem. Try any hibiscus herbal tea and stevia.
