The elf is coming back—and this year, you deserve a plan that doesn’t involve searching for ideas five minutes before bed.

My free Elf on the Shelf 2026 Calendar gives you a place to organize your ideas, plan a few special surprises, and leave yourself some breathing room. You don’t need an elaborate setup every morning. A funny sign, a favorite toy, or a simple printable can keep the fun going.

A few minutes of planning can make busy weeknights easier and lazy weekend mornings more magical. Here’s how I use my 2026 Elf on the Shelf Calendar.

A Free Elf Planner With Room for Your Own Ideas

Every family’s December looks different. Some nights you have time for a playful scene. Other nights, moving the elf and setting out a sign is plenty.

That’s why this blank elf calendar template leaves the planning up to you. It includes:

• Dates from November 22 through December 26, 2026.
• Open spaces to write your own elf ideas.
• Highlighted weekends and Christmas week to help you spot opportunities for longer activities.
• A few photos for inspiration.
• A cheerful elf illustration to make planning feel festive.

Print this elf planning worksheet on regular letter-size paper and keep it somewhere the kids won’t discover it. Pencil works especially well—because December plans have a way of changing!

Start With Your Busiest Nights

Before filling in your elf plan, mark the evenings when you’ll need something quick. Think school concerts, practices, late work nights, holiday shopping, and family visits. Give those dates your easiest setups first.

A printable sign beside the elf can turn a simple move into a joke, a message, or a little moment of Christmas fun.

My Christian Elf Signs are a good option for families who enjoy faith-inspired humor. The kid-friendly collection includes 36 signs, giving you plenty of choices for busy mornings.

For older kids who enjoy silly slang, my Gen Alpha elf signs offer another quick way to get a laugh. Set out a sign, pose the elf, and your next morning’s surprise is ready. With 30 signs to choose from, you will have a lot of options.

Planning tip: Choose several signs at once and keep them together so you’re not searching for the right one at bedtime.

Save Activities for Days the Kids Can Enjoy Them

An activity setup is more fun when the kids have time to explore it.

Use the highlighted weekends and Christmas week as a reminder to consider crafts, pretend play, or a missing-elf hunt. Your family’s school schedule may vary, so choose the dates that work for you.

My Christmas Squishy Elf Kit can provide several different surprises from one collection:

• A butter squishy setup with an elf costume and matching paper craft.
• A cube-themed setup with a printable squishy activity.
• A squishy market with a table, shop signs, cutouts, and Chief Squish Officer badges.

The expanded kit also includes five Christmas mystery squishy designs with envelopes and collector cards. You can spread the pieces across multiple days or bring them together for one bigger reveal.

It’s a playful choice for kids who love squishies—and a helpful way to get more than one idea onto your calendar.

And as an added bonus, I am giving away the butter squishy Elf costume and kids craft template on my blog. Click here to download your free butter squishy elf scene.

For the Roblox Gamers

This year, I added some fun gaming elf setups and Christmas activities to my Etsy shop line-up. If your kids play Roblox, check out my kits inspired by Dress to Impress, 99 Nights, and Animal Hospital.

Each kit offers a fun themed backdrop, elf signs, props, and more. The 99 Nights kit even comes with a map template and shows you how to set up a fun scavenger hunt based on the Roblox game.

Give Favorite Toys a Refresh

Your child’s toy shelf is full of potential elf ideas.

Let the elf visit a dollhouse, join a toy animal gathering, or borrow a favorite vehicle. Familiar toys can make a small setup feel personal.

In my house, Gabby’s Dollhouse is a favorite toy. This year, the elves will surprise my kids with festive room backdrops, kitten cutouts, Christmas trees, and coloring pages to give a favorite dollhouse a holiday refresh. It’s a way to make a toy the kids already own feel new and exciting again.

You can get this Gabby style dollhouse kid on my Etsy Shop. It’s quick, easy and inspires a whole morning of play.

Leave Room for Family Gatherings

If cousins are visiting, pencil in a setup they can enjoy together.

My Cousin Crew Elf Kit includes coordinating signs, pennants, and printable sweaters labeled “Cousin Crew,” plus a matching iron-on printable for family shirts.

The iron-on printable is key for my family because my nieces and nephews can be particular about what shirts they like. With an iron-on transfer, you can print the Cousin Crew decal in a variety of sizes and put it on ANY SHIRT THEY WANT.

So the teen gets a hoodie, the niece gets her fluffy pink dress, the nephew gets his favorite tagless blue shirt, and the baby gets a onesie. Everyone gets to wear something they love.

Getting the elves in on the fun gives the little kids another reason to love their matching outfits. Plus, think of the family photo!

Everyone gets a cousin crew shirt this year with this easy printable iron-on transfer pattern!

Keep those dates flexible until your plans are settled. Your elf planner should help you, not give you another schedule to keep!

Keep a Few Last-Minute Elf Ideas Ready

Even with a plan, you’ll probably have a night when you forget. Leave a few easy ideas in reserve:

• The elf reads a book to stuffed animals.
• The elf holds a funny printable sign.
• The elf sits in a toy car.
• The elf hides among the Christmas decorations.
• The elf joins dolls or action figures for a game.

These are useful backups when you need a quick setup using things already in the house.
