Looking for easy Elf on the Shelf ideas that don’t require buying more toys or staying up half the night setting up an elaborate scene? Let your elf borrow your child’s favorite toys! From feeding the Paw Patrol pups to opening a squishy shop, these simple Christmas elf ideas turn everyday toys into overnight surprises.
One of my favorite ways to make Elf on the Shelf fun is to use things the kids already love. Barbie dolls, toy dogs, superheroes, dollhouses and those ever-growing collections of squishies can all become part of your elf’s next adventure.
The best part? You don’t need to be an expert elf planner. Most of these ideas take just a few minutes, and you can make them as simple or elaborate as you like.
Here are 10 easy Elf on the Shelf ideas using toys you probably already have around the house!
1. The Elf Tossed Treats to the Paw Patrol Pups
Setup time: 2 minutes
Apparently, your elf decided the Paw Patrol pups deserved a little Christmas treat!
Line up your child’s toy dogs and scatter a few small, individually wrapped treats around them. Position your elf as if they’re tossing the goodies to the pups. You could even give one pup a treat balanced on its head!
Make it extra funny: Leave a little note from the elf:
“I heard these pups were on the NICE list!”
Use wrapped treats that are safe for your child and pets, and keep small items away from young children who might put them in their mouths.
2. The Elf Is Playing With Barbie
Setup time: 3 minutes
Who says the elf can’t have a little fashion fun?
Set up a Barbie fashion show, tea party, sleepover or living-room dance party. Your elf might be trying on an outfit, sitting in the driver’s seat of the convertible or getting ready for a glamorous night out.
For a super-easy setup, arrange a few dolls in a row and place your elf in the middle as the guest of honor.
Make it extra funny: Add a little sign that says, “I thought YOU were supposed to dress me!”
This is a great idea for kids who love dolls and pretend play, and you can create a different scene every time using the same toys.
3. The Elf Thinks Batman Smells!
Setup time: 2 minutes
Sometimes the funniest elf ideas are the simplest.
Gather your child’s superhero figures, position your elf near Batman and leave a sign next to Batman that reads:
“I DO NOT SMELL!”
You can arrange the other superheroes as if they’re laughing, pointing or trying to figure out who wrote the sign.
For a little extra drama, put Batman on his own with the elf standing nearby, looking entirely too pleased with the prank.
This is an especially fun setup for kids who love superheroes and silly jokes. You don’t need a complicated scene when one ridiculous sign can do all the work!
4. The Elf Opened a Squishy Shop
Setup time: 5 minutes
If your child has a collection of squishies, your elf has everything needed to open a tiny store!
Arrange the squishies on a table, toy shelf or small box. Use blocks or other toys to make a counter, then let your elf play shopkeeper. You could even make a little checkout area.
Add signs like:
- BEST SELLER
- NEW ARRIVAL
- SOLD OUT
- SQUISHY SHOP
For an extra-funny twist, make it look as if the elf has been shopping with your child’s collection all night.

Setup time: 5 minutes
Has your child been playing with their favorite dollhouse for months? Let the elf give it a Christmas makeover!
Move a few toys around, add some festive decorations and position your elf as if they’ve been busy decorating all night.
Create a Christmas party, a cozy bedroom scene or a festive kitchen. Your elf might be hanging decorations, setting up a celebration or getting the whole house ready for Christmas morning.
The fun is in making a familiar toy feel new again. Your child gets to rediscover their favorite playset through a Christmas adventure.

6. The Elf Became a Doctor at the Toy Animal Hospital
Setup time: 5 minutes
Apparently, the elf has decided to help the neighborhood animals!
Gather toy dogs, cats or other animal figures and arrange them in a pretend waiting room. Your elf can be the doctor, receptionist or nurse. Add a small piece of paper as a patient chart, and use blocks to create a check-in desk.
You could leave a note that says:
“Emergency! The reindeer have been working overtime. All animals welcome!”
This idea works especially well for children who love animal toys, pretend play and little role-playing adventures.
For older teens and tweens who love Roblox-style games, you can take the idea further with a full Animal Hospital scene, complete with check in area and anomaly picture badges,

7. The Elf Crashed a Toy Car Race
Setup time: 3 minutes
Get out the toy cars, trucks or race cars and set up a Christmas Grand Prix!
Use blocks to make a starting line and arrange the cars as if they’re ready to race. Your elf can sit in the driver’s seat, wave a little flag or act as the race official.
For a quick finish line, use two pencils and a strip of paper.
Leave a note that says:
“Ready, set, SNOW!”
You can even give the cars silly racing names or create a pretend leaderboard for your child to discover.
This is a great low-mess setup for kids who love anything with wheels.
8. The Elf Staged a Superhero Showdown
Setup time: 4 minutes
Bring out the superheroes and let your elf organize the most ridiculous battle of the season.
Position the figures around the room as if they’re facing off. Maybe Batman is guarding the Christmas tree, Spider-Man is hanging upside down from a safe, low spot, and the elf is acting as the referee.
You don’t need to create a real battle or make a huge mess. A few strategically placed figures and one funny sign are enough.
Try signs like:
- SUPERHERO TRAINING IN SESSION
- NORTH POLE SECURITY
- NO VILLAINS ALLOWED
- BATMAN SMELLS
This is another easy way to use a child’s existing collection instead of buying special elf props for every scene.
9. The Elf Took Over Dress-Up Time
Setup time: 4 minutes
Your elf has discovered the dress-up box, and things have gotten out of hand!
Arrange a few dolls, action figures or dress-up accessories as if the elf has organized a fashion competition. You could make a runway from a strip of paper or use a row of books as the audience seating.
For kids who love fashion games, create a mini challenge: festive, fancy, silly or winter wonderland.
Your elf can be the host, judge or contestant.
If your child loves Roblox Dress to Impress, you could make the setup feel like a video game fashion competition, complete with a runway, judging cards and a holiday themes.

10. The Elf Created a Christmas Toy Party
Setup time: 5 minutes
When you can’t decide which toys to use, invite them all!
Gather a few favorites — dolls, toy animals, superheroes, cars and squishies — and arrange them around a small table or on the floor. Your elf can be the host of a Christmas party, with toys gathered for a celebration.
Use paper scraps as party hats, a few blocks as tables and a small note as an invitation.
Your elf could leave a message like:
“You’re invited! Bring your favorite toy. Christmas party starts now!”
This idea is especially good when your child has lots of different toys they love. You can change the guests and theme every time, so the scene feels new without starting from scratch.
Make Elf on the Shelf Easier This Christmas
The secret to easy Elf on the Shelf ideas isn’t having a house full of special props. It’s finding new ways to use the toys and little things your children already love.
A toy dog becomes a patient. A collection of squishies becomes a shop. A familiar dollhouse becomes a Christmas party venue. And a simple sign can turn a few superhero figures into the funniest scene of the week.
If you’d like a little help creating more elaborate setups, printable elf props and themed kits can save time while giving your elf a whole new adventure to share.
